Project Watan Calls for an Electoral Law That Ensures Fair Representation and the Right Balance

Project Watan’s Executive Board held its weekly meeting, chaired by MP Neemat Frem, alongside MP Sajih Attieh and in the presence of the Board members. After discussing regional developments and the economic, social, and living conditions of the Lebanese people, the Board issued the following statement:

First: Regional Developments and Their Impact on Lebanon

The Board members noted signs of the drums of war beating once again, alongside escalating tensions in the region, as well as the risks and direct repercussions these developments could have on Lebanon.

In this regard, Project Watan stressed the need to prioritize the logic of the state and the national interest, and to make every possible effort to spare Lebanon any adventure that could drag it into a new inferno, one whose scale and repercussions would be greater and more dangerous than anything the country has experienced so far, and that would directly affect the Lebanese entity.

Second: Mounting Economic, Social, and Living Pressures

The Board members discussed the difficult living conditions endured by the Lebanese people amid declining purchasing power, rising living costs, and continued pressure on various economic and productive sectors, with direct repercussions for families, businesses, professionals, and workers.

They also stressed the need not to remain idle while awaiting the outcome of the conflicts, but rather to take the initiative and introduce practical, swift solutions, accompanied by interim measures, even if temporary, to ensure a minimum level of continuity and protect the people.

Third: Safeguarding the Lebanese Entity and Reforming Representation

The Board members considered that the challenges Lebanon faces today threaten its stability and very existence, making it necessary to strengthen its institutions and develop its political system in a way that ensures fair representation, balance, and effectiveness.

On this basis, Project Watan upholds the need to adopt an electoral law that ensures fair representation, alongside the establishment of a Senate in addition to the Chamber of Deputies. This would serve as a fundamental safeguard for national balance, strengthen political stability, and protect Lebanon’s vital issues within the constitutional institutions.

Based on this conviction, Project Watan had already drafted a law proposal in this regard, believing that a Senate is not a constitutional luxury but a fundamental national necessity for safeguarding the Lebanese entity and consolidating balance and partnership, while serving as the essential framework for the genuine representation of Lebanon’s various components.
